The second reason for doing so was that the students who elected to enroll in ROTC were exempted from the university Physical Education requirement. Better (we reasoned) to march in uniform than run through campus in loosely-organized groups wearing short pants. The jogging fad—often associated with Jim Fixx’s book on running (1977)—did not begin until many years later. E. students were regularly subjected to ridicule by the student body, while the ROTC students were perceived as normal. These attitudes might not have been statistically supportable by the actual enrollment numbers, but they prevailed nonetheless.

Specific protest incidents constitute, in many ways, the most memorable part of my college experience. This pattern of repression/counter action parallels the experience of USMA cadets, but with a key difference. At West Point it was believed that a certain spirit of independence was characteristic of great leadership. When MacArthur was a cadet he took a cannon from Trophy Point and hoisted it atop the West Academic Building clock tower. Determining how he might have been able to do this became an assigned problem for years thereafter in the Department of Military Art and Engineering.

That may be why our captain went out of his way to demonstrate his own physical prowess. He ran whenever and wherever he might have walked and continually tried to tempt us to challenge him to races or endurance contests. The company commander is the ‘old man’, but this one was probably no more than 30 or 32 at the time and a formidable physical specimen. His head was shaved, before that was popular, but he had a small tuft of hair, approximately the size and shape of a soul patch, at the top of his forehead.
